Choosing the Right Expert for Your Digital Project

Bringing an external expert into a digital project can accelerate delivery, fill a skills gap or bring a fresh perspective. It can also become an expensive disappointment when a profile that looks perfect on paper doesn't fit the mission.

Clarify the need first

Before looking at CVs, describe the mission precisely: context, expected deliverables, stakeholders, level of autonomy and duration. A clear mission description attracts the right candidates and makes selection easier. Writing it often reveals that the real need differs from the initial request.

Look beyond the CV

Certifications and past projects matter, but they are not enough. Test candidates on realistic cases: a short workshop simulation, a design question, a stakeholder scenario. You will quickly see how they think, communicate and handle ambiguity.

Soft skills are often decisive: the ability to listen, to challenge constructively and to work with internal teams rather than around them.

Set the expert up for success

Onboarding matters as much for external people as for employees. Provide access, context and introductions from day one, and agree on objectives and check-in points for the first weeks.

Follow up during the mission

Regular touch-points between the organisation, the expert and, where relevant, the provider help detect misunderstandings early. Adjusting scope or profile after a few weeks is far better than discovering a mismatch at the end of the mission.

The right expert, well chosen and well supported, brings much more than extra capacity: knowledge that stays in your team after the mission ends.
